Constructed between 1858 and 1881, the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was better known as the Weston State Hospital, and is the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in the United States, and may be the second largest in the world. Visitors can tour the building that housed 2,400 people in the 1950s.
The Oglebay Park opened for visitors in 1928, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The park contains two golf courses, 11 tennis courses, walking trails, a zoo, the Mansion Museum, gardens, a greenhouse, an amphitheater, a planetarium, a ski slope, and a lake.
At the 30-acre Oglebay Park Good Zoo, visitors can see over 50 species of animals, ride a train, visit a petting farm, and attend camps and programs. Some animals that can be seen at the zoo include African wild dogs, meerkats, spectacled bears, lemurs, bald eagles, and poison dart frogs.
