On an area as big as 2 football fields, the Rock City is made from 200 limestone rocks, some as big as a house. These formations appeared 250 million years ago, when this was the bottom of an inland sea.
With at least 330 bird species spotted over one year, the Cheyenne Bottoms cover 41,000 acres of wetland and is a very popular place among bird-watchers. The Education Center displays other animals which can be found in the area, from fish to salamanders.
With the fort active until 1889, the Fort Hays State Historic Site includes a visitor's center, the parade ground, and 4 of the historic buildings: 2 officers' quarters, the blockhouse, and the guardhouse.
