Fort Macon

Located on a barrier island, Fort Macon offers access to water on three sides to the Atlantic Ocean, Beaufort Inlet and Bogue Sound. Starting in 1826, the fort's 26 vaulted rooms that allowed protection from attackers, as well as serving as a federal prison during the Spanish-American War.
